FERRIS - Johnnie James Bills, Sr., 87, passed away at his home in Ferris on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 with his family by his side.

Johnnie was born in Carey, Texas on Feb. 1, 1925 to John L. and Madge (Caldwell) Bills. The Bills family had a 120 acre farm and dairy that he worked on with a horse drawn plow. He went to school through the 9th grade and quit to join the military. He joined the United States Army during World War II serving his tour in Europe and Korea.

After his military service he worked in heavy equipment and later owned a heavy equipment company named B & D Company for ten years with a crew of ten men, five backhoes and two Drotts. He worked on such projects as Parkland Hospital and Valley View Mall. 

He sold the business and went to work for Matt M LaVail Inc. He worked on such projects for them as Texas Stadium and traveled five states installing buildings for the telephone company. He officially retired from the company in 1990 and then went back for an additional five years before he retired again. 

His hobby was wood work. He made cedar chests and various furniture items for the home.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bills for more than forty five years; children: William Bills and his wife Linda, Jeanette Pence, Johnnie Bills, Jr. and his wife, Patricia and Teresa and her husband, Tony Wilhoite; thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Madge and Ben Dearinger, John and Eva Bills, brothers, Conrad Bills and J.W. (Buck) Bills, daughters Linda Bills, Christine Bills and Debbie Arnold.

Visitation was on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. A celebration of his life took place on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10 a.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Richard Moody officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m. in Restland Cemetery of Dallas under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc., www.jekeevermortuary.com.
