DeSoto Public Library hosted teen volunteer awards
DESOTO - On Thursday, Aug. 5 at 3:30 p.m., the DeSoto Public Library hosted an awards ceremony in recognition of teens who have volunteered at the library this summer.
The keynote speaker was Carol Glenn.
Mayor Carl Sherman presented the awards and there was a special appearance by Miss Heart of Texas USA, Felicia Bolton.
These teens participated in a seven week volunteer program headed by Marq Runnels, the library’s teen volunteer coordinator.
The program provided them with confidence-building volunteer experience, practical job skills, customer and public service experience and an introduction to possible careers in libraries.
Forty-three teens successfully completed the program which consisted of assisting at the check out desk, shelving library materials, assisting with the Summer Reading Club program, tutoring children in reading ages 6-9, training as Teen Techs and creating and producing a music video.
The DeSoto Library staff partnered with Eric Williams CEO of Out of the Box Entertainment, to assist teens in creating and producing a music video to promote literacy in teens and children.
Under his direction and utilizing his Studio Bus, the teens produced the library’s project of the summer entitled "Rea-ding’s a Good Time."
This project has inspired the teen volunteers to develop a community project called, R.E.A.D. Young Readers, Young Leaders, (Readers Educated and Determined) that will continue to promote literacy in children and teens throughout the school year.
Their goal is to bring awareness to the importance of reading and library use by establishing book clubs, performing at schools, libraries, community events and touring on Mr. Williams’ Studio Bus.
