OPINION: Upset? Then speak up!
Special to The Ellis County Press
After speaking at the last Ferris council meeting Monday, Aug.9, what I said and what I meant seem to have been taken out of context.
I want to be perfectly clear this is not about the volunteers who actually volunteer and who dedicate themselves to the community and helping when and where they can.
It is the volunteers who I appreciate for making that sacrifice. It was never about the volunteers, it was about the fact the current EMS service we have does not and has not ever provided 24/7 service and now we can get 24/7 service at a fraction of the cost.
As it stands, the current EMS service does not show up or is slow to respond 70 percent of the time and you expect me to feel comfortable with that?
I voiced my opinion about what I thought and felt was the best option and made the most sense not only financially, but also out of concern for mine and my family’s well being at any time of the day, not just between the hours of 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
If you are a volunteer, as in non-paid volunteer, then this has nothing to do with you. I applaud your effort and thank you for your service.
But personally, I don’t want to play Russian Roulette on whether or not an ambulance is going to show up when I need one. If you look at the numbers of the current service, that is exactly what I am doing.
Why should I pay for a service that I only have a 30 percent chance of someone actually showing up?
Honestly, does that make any sense to you?
Call me what you will, but all I did was voice my opinion and because of that I was threatened by the staff of the FFD and personally by Lisa Duran who said "you better hope that you never need our service!"
Duran also said a comment to Councilman Billy Don Dunn, "I hope your house burns down and nobody shows up to help!"
She has basically said she is not going to show up and do her job when she is needed.
Now tell me, is this the type of individual and mentality you want providing EMS service?
That is exactly what I was talking about when I said, "I don’t want my tax dollars going towards a department or service that feels as though they are owed something and feel that they can hold the citizens of Ferris hostage by threatening to quit if the EMS service is outsourced to CareFlite."
If that’s the case, then they really don’t care about the citizens of Ferris like they said they did.
You know the saddest thing about all of this, I came into this thing on the tail end of it and decided to say something and stand up for what I believe, but this is not about me.
This has been going on for years and years and only recently has the city council begun to realize it and they decided to do something about it.
It was the city council who made the decision and voted, not me.
All I did was voice my opinion and write the truth about what happened and I have it all on tape if you want to see it.
So if you are going to be upset, fine be upset, but don’t be upset at me for wanting something better for myself, my family and the citizens of Ferris.
