Best Southwest Relay for Life coming to DeSoto May 21
DESOTO — The communities of DeSoto, Duncanville, Cedar Hill and Lancaster are joining together in the fight against cancer with the Best Southwest Relay for Life event, a signature American Cancer Society activity.
The Relay is a 12-hour overnight team event taking place from 6 p.m., Friday, May 21 through 7 a.m., Saturday, May 22 at DeSoto West Middle School, 800 N. Westmoreland Rd., DeSoto.
The American Cancer Society extends an invitation to all cancer survivors and their families to participate in Relay For Life. It’s a unique community event that allows individuals from all walks of life to join in the fight against cancer. Last year, more than three million Americans participated in Relay For Life and more than 500,000 cancer survivors walked the opening laps.
A Luminaria Ceremony will be held after dark to pay tribute to those who have faced this disease. The Luminaria bags have the name of the honoree on them, and a candle inside. Luminaries are placed around the track and at dark, the can-dles are lit to pay tribute to each honoree.
"This event is about celebrating life and honoring all cancer survivors and their families who’ve supported them through their illness," said Gloria Lockhart, Luminaria chairperson of the Southwest Relay For Life.
DeSoto ISD has been very involved in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event for the past several years, including the hosting of the event at one of the schools, volunteers and participants and teams! The district has over ten school and district teams this year and many other employees participate through support of team members!
