Northside Elementary gets into the game to dominate TAKS
DESOTO – It was learning though fun and games at Northside Elementary as fifth-grade students battled to become the winner of The Amazing Race: Math on March 30 and 31. As part of a collaborative effort, teachers hope to build on skills which have been taught throughout the school year as fifth-grade students prepare to take the TAKS math test on Tuesday, April 6.
"We selected areas that needed improvement," said Math Specialist LaK-esha Bass.
"As our students prepare to take the TAKS, we hope they employ what they have learned so they can succeed."
Students were issued several challenges which tested their understanding of converting measurements, geometry, statistics and probability and other mathematical processes. Activities such as Math Quiz Game Show required knowledge of various math skills while Measurement Mambo and Attributes of Figures tested specific mathematical objectives.
Amid competition, students united in assembly where they received pointers on improving proficiency from Instructional Coordinator Pam Brown.
The Amazing Race: Math concluded with an award ceremony where teams coming in first, second and third place received a free-dress day along with goody bags filled with school supplies.
Third and fourth graders will also have the opportunity to participate in The Amazing Race in the upcoming weeks.
