The Zula B. Wylie Library, 225 Cedar St., Cedar Hill, is offering a free financial planning workshop Thursday, Aug. 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. The presenter, Chris Currin, will provide information designed to help protect the public from human frailty, big corporations and the IRS.

Back to School Rally and Fair

The Cedar Hill Independent School District will host its annual Back to School Rally and Fair Saturday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Cedar Hill High School.

The community and business partners are encouraged to assist the students through donations of school supplies to ensure that all Cedar Hill students have the same opportunity for a successful school year. A book signing by author Cordell Adams at the Library Assembly Hall will be on Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m. along with other activities taking place in August in the city of DeSoto.

DeSoto talent search

The DeSoto Arts Commission is seeking singers, dancers, musicians and other talented performers for the Seventh Annual DeSoto Star Search Competition. Open auditions for the competition are Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. An appointment is required in order to audition as well as a $5 audition fee. DeSoto Star Search is an annual talent show sponsored by the DeSoto Arts Commission. This year’s show is scheduled for Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Corner Theatre at DeSoto Town Center. Kids Fishing Tournament

Red Oak Masonic Lodge #461 kicks off U.S. Flag program for 2009

The Red Oak Masonic Lodge is now offering American Flags to the citizens of Red Oak. For an annual subscription fee of only $30 per flag (5 for $25 each) the brothers of the Red Oak Masonic Lodge will install a 3’x5’ American Flag on a steel pole at your location early on the morning of the holiday and then take it down at the close of the day. All funds raised are tax-deductible and go to several Masonic sponsored programs, including the Dallas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Explorers for youth 15-20, are meeting on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone who would like to know more please call 972-921-4400.

Friday afternoons Games at Sims Library

For several years, Sims Library has offered chess on Friday afternoons for area youth. They are now adding different games to this fun time at the library. Along with chess and checkers, participants will be able to play Sorry, Uno, Skip-bo and Boggle. If you have a favorite game, bring it along. Ages 10 and under play from 3 - 4 p.m. and ages 11-18 play from 4 - 5 p.m. every Friday afternoon.

Cowboy Church of Ellis County holds Youth Night

This summer the Cowboy Church of Ellis County has been conducting a program called Youth Night at the Park or YNAP. There will be free hot dogs, snow cones and sports. YNAP will continue from July 22 to Sept. 2 beginning at 6 and going until 8:30 p.m. on every Wednesday night at Getzendaner Park in Waxahachie. Anyone from third to 12th grade and parents are welcome to attend.

Paint your own wind chime

Sims Library teens, ages 13-18, will be painting wooden wind chimes on Wednesday, Aug. 26 from 4 – 5 p.m. in the library’s Meeting Room. Teens will paint their own personal design on the wind chimes.

Gaming at the library

Sims Library presents "Gaming at the Library" for ages 11-18 on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 6 – 7 p.m. in the library’s Meeting Room. Test your skills on the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. Bring your own controls if you like.
