MIDLOTHIAN - The Gerdau steel mill in Midlothian will donate more than $178,000 worth of structural and reinforcement steel to the Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties Kitchen Campaign project. The 200 tons of steel will be used to construct a new kitchen facility that will lower costs and allow the organization to better serve the community.

“Our relationship with Meals-on-Wheels helps provide support to deserving families within our community,” said Glen Carlisle, vice president and general manager of the Gerdau mill in Midlothian. “I have been personally involved with this organization, and it will be rewarding to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our community.”

It is expected that Meals-on-Wheels will initially provide 1,200 meals at the opening of the 25,000 square foot facility, projected for the fall of 2012. Meals-on-Wheels plans to raise $5 million dollars for the facility’s construction. To date, $1.4 million has been raised toward the project.

“We are ecstatic about the gift from Gerdau,” said Vinsen Faris, executive director of Meals-on-Wheels. “This gift of steel will help us get closer to our goal, and reduce our overall building costs.”
