Clothing and school supply donations are still needed for Waxahachie Independent School District’s “Operation First Day of School.” The last day to donate is Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The countdown is on for Operation First Day of School 2011!! Operation First Day of School will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the Turner Learning Center from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. Since 2009, Operation First Day of School has assisted more than 1,300 families and nearly 3,000 students.

The event is made possible through donations of time and money by the Waxahachie community. WISD students must qualify for the services they receive and goods are distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

The district is seeking monetary donations to help purchase school supplies as well as new and gently used clothing.

A generic school supply list is available for those businesses and organizations who wish to conduct a school supply drive. The district is asking that donated clothing be washed and clothing still on hangers is preferred. Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Aug. 2 and may be dropped off at the WISD administration building.

Operation First Day of School (OFDoS) was established in 2009 to benefit WISD students in need by supplying them with free school supplies, free clothing (new or gently used), free immunizations, free haircuts and free dental screenings and fluoride treatments.

More than half of the district’s student population, 52 percent, is economically disadvantaged with these numbers coming straight from the district’s free & reduced lunch program numbers – a program that is governed by federal guidelines.

Operation First Day of School 2011 Honorary Co-Chairs, are Paul & Jennifer Stevens and WHS senior Justin Fox and WHS junior Marisa Price.

These four individuals will lead the OFDoS executive planning team in securing monetary donations, school supplies, new and gently used clothing and volunteers.

Parents and community members wishing to obtain more information on Operation First Day of School are encouraged to contact Nicole Mansell, Waxahachie ISD Director of Public Relations, at 972-923-4631 or nmansell@wisd.org.
