Summer Balloon Classic & AirFest to be held July 22 - 24 at MidWay
Midlothian - An Aviation Extravaganza featuring 40, colorful Hot Air Balloons, the DFW Summer Balloon Classic & AirFest, presented by the city of Midlothian, takes place at MidWay Regional Airport, in Midlothian Friday, July 22 - Sunday, July 24.
This is a free event to the public, with $10 per vehicle parking.
This is not just an event, but, an experience for all the senses and has something to offer all ages and lifestyles. The hot air balloons are the stars of the show with twice daily mass ascensions.
Morning flights are followed by top ranked competitors flying their balloons to compete in challenging tasks right before your eyes. World and National champions will participate creating a very exciting atmosphere as they compete in the competition sanctioned by the Balloon Federation of America who chose this event to host the Texas State Championship! It’s early but definitely worth coming out to see!
Saturday evening showcases the “Lite the Nite” balloon glow where as the sun goes down you experience the sights as the balloons standing inflated glow like huge colorful orbs.
Saturday afternoon features an air show, “MidWay To the Skies,” with formation flights and aerobatic performances, a thrilling sight for all! The stars of the show are the breathtaking Trojan Phlyers, also based at MidWay, with their astounding close formation precision aerobatics. We are proud to produce the only Aerobatic Air Racing Challenge in the south!
Woman against Woman, Julia Wood, current ARC champion faces Kate Kyer (both are airline captains!). Man against Man and here’s where the skill comes in…husband against wife...Julia against husband Tony Wood in his TurboShark…teams of two will take to the skies in dramatic aerobatic maneuvers in a timed sequence. Spectators cheer their favorites on to win right at the spectator line! Mike “Spanky” Gallaway both flying and announcing along with Jan Collmer round out the performances with a special appearance by Randy Ball with his Mig17 jet.
Aside from balloon flights and the air show, all other times feature skydivers, helicopters, a variety of airplanes, military aircraft, Commemorative Air Force, Cold War museum, powered hang gliders, powered parachutes, radio control aircraft and more, in static displays and demonstrations.
Flights will be available to the public in helicopters, airplanes, a B25 bomber, DC3 and during balloon flying times, tethered balloon rides.
