Walmart begins construction
RED OAK - The city of Red Oak and Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Company held a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Walmart Supercenter, to be located at the northeast quadrant of I-35 and Ovilla Road, Monday, June 20.
“This is the result of years of effort to recruit Walmart to the community,” said Mayor Alan Hugley.
“We need to develop a strong retail tax base along I-35 to help reduce the property tax burden on our home owners. A lot of effort is being made by the city council and our Economic and Industrial Development Corporations. You can expect more retail development in the near future.”
Recently, city staff has been actively working with Walmart representatives and project engineers on almost a daily basis. Construction permits have been issued and heavy equipment is now commencing work.
The facility will be 152,063 square feet on twenty-four acres. It will include general retail, groceries, a pharmacy and garden department.
You can expect to see construction in the area over the next year as the store is built and new entrances and turn lanes are added. The store is expected to be open by April or May 2012.
“We need to credit the council, our planning and zoning commission and our economic development team, including our retail consultants at Catalyst Commercial, for this success,” said Hugley.
“Because of their efforts, this supercenter is attracting the interest of other national retail and restaurant chains. You can expect to see additional development in the area.”
