Catholic Daughters Award Scholarships to 8 Local Students
ENNIS (Texas) - CDA Regent Mary Ann Trojacek, who also serves as Scholarship Committee Chairperson for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Our Lady of the Bluebonnets of Ennis, announced the 2010-11 CDA Scholarship recipients at the May 2 meeting, held at the Knights of Columbus Hall: “This year we were able to provide scholarships to eight young ladies and gentlemen who will soon be entering college -- all of whom were very worthy applicants.”
“The CDA Scholarship applicant’s criterion is based on the student’s GPA, church and community involvement, a written essay, and each student must be sponsored by at least one CDA member. The amount of each scholarship is based on a percentage of the criteria met by each student, as determined by the scholarship committee,” Trojacek explained.
The following students were named 2010-11 CDA Scholarship Recipients:
Adam Martinek $200 – Sponsored by CDA member – Grandmother, Margaret Martinek; Parents: James and Brenda Martinek - Adam plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Electrical Engineering.
Bethany Prachyl - $100 – Sponsored by CDA member – Grandmother, Margaret Prachyl; Parents: Alan and Debbie Prachyl - Bethany plans to attend Navarro College, then on to Baylor University to study Medical Imaging Technology.
Curtis Tekell - $100 - Sponsored by CDA member - Grandmother, Margaret Spaniel; Parents: Mike and Susan Tekell - Curtis plans to attend A & M University with a plan to study Kinesiology, and a desire to become a Coach.
Nathan Puente - $100 - Sponsored by CDA member – Grandmother, Annette Honza; Parents: David and Karen Puente - Nathan plans to attend Blinn College, then A & M University, majoring in Sports Education with ambition to become a Soccer Coach.
Paige Slovacek - $100 – Sponsored by CDA member – Diane Sulak; Parents: Thomas and Carol Slovacek - Paige plans to attendTexas A & M University, majoring in Political Science with a specialization in International Relations.
Seth Zhanel - $100 - Sponsored by CDA member – Grandmother, Marian Zhanel; Parents: Eddie and Debbie Zhanel - Seth plans to attend the University of Dallas, or Texas State University, with a major in Math.
Justin Taylor - $50 - Sponsored by CDA member – Diane Sulak; Mother: Judy Taylor – Justin plans to attend Navarro College, then Tarleton State University, majoring in AG Science.
Dylan Honza - $50 – Sponsored by CDA member – Cindy Honza; Parents: Raymond and Cindy Honza - Dylan plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Business.
“Our Scholarship fundraising program is an integral part of our members’ annual goals toward providing service to our parish and community,” said Trojacek. “The Scholarship fundraiser is primarily focused around an annual Quilt Raffle, coupled with other member donations, which are given in memory of family and friends.”
“This year’s Raffle Drawing for a beautiful designer Quilt will be held at our June 6 meeting at the KC Hall.”
“Since the month of June is our Court’s final meeting for this fiscal year, we always look forward to it being a fun meeting for our members, which will include an evening of “Swap Bingo,” explained Trojacek.
“Our officers and members extend a special invitation to each Scholarship recipient and their parents to attend as honored guests for this meeting, which will be held June 6, at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. (Group pictures of recipients for news releases will be taken that evening.)
“Our regularly scheduled CDA monthly meetings will resume in September, when we will start our annual Membership Drive. New and prospective members are always welcome,” Trojacek concluded.
