President of Lancaster Chamber of Commerce
November, 2010 – What’s wrong with this picture? … The Texas Rangers are in the World Series – and the Dallas Cowboys are done for the year! … As improbable as it seems, the Rangers won their first Divisional Playoff Series in 39 years against the team with the best record in the American League, Tampa Bay, and then beat the mighty New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, 4 games to 2. The Texas Rangers are in the World Series! … GO RANGERS!
October is always a special time for the Chamber in Lancaster. … First we had “2nd Saturday on the Square” on the 9th, and then OktoberFest on the 8th, 9th, and 10th, followed by one of the best golf tournaments around here – The 27th Annual Duffer’s Derby which teed off on October 11th, 2010 at Lancaster’s Country View Golf Course. This was all followed on Thursday, October 14th with the Annual “State of the District” address by Dr. Michael McFarland at our monthly Chamber Luncheon, catered by Café Raaz.
At our Chamber Luncheon, Dr. McFarland and his District Team showed us many of the accomplishments and advancements our students have made in the last year. … It was an inspirational presentation, from the National Champion Honor Guard presenting the colors, to the third grader telling about her school, the president of the student association touting the high school’s accomplishments, and the elementary teacher who made an eloquent presentation… Wonderful! … Thanks to Northwood University who got involved by sponsoring the luncheon, and talking about some of their new programs.
OktoberFest kicked off a Preview Party Friday night October 8th with Mayor Knight tapping a keg of wine to start the party in the Rose Garden of the MKT Depot. …The evening was perfect and the weather was delightful to eat in the Garden. … Special beers, wines, knockwursts, dancers and accordions added to the festivities – with a German opera singer adding some pop. This year’s OktoberFest stretched over 4 days – from the Preview Party on Friday and concluding with the Duffers Derby on Monday. It was a highly successful weekend and lots of fun!
The 27th Annual Duffer’s Derby Golf Tournament was played under clear skies on October 11, 2010, on perfect greens at Country View Golf Course. … Golf Pro David Royar bragged that his greens were as good as or better than any other course in North Texas – public or private – and it turns out he was not bragging. … He was telling the truth! … Thirty business teams and numerous volunteers enjoyed Chick-fil-A for lunch and Outback Steaks for dinner, with a little golf in between. … “Lancaster Means Business” is our motto – and there was plenty of business interchange done that day! … Thanks so much to Walmart-Lancaster and our other sponsors who helped put on the day’s events. …Thanks also to the herculean efforts of Golf Chair Sherry Kinney, and her team who made things run so smoothly. … And most importantly - THANKS to Mary Kinnard who helps pull all this together each year!
… And we’ll see you. …
