Trooper shooting investigated

ITALY – Texas Rangers are currently investigating what appears to be the recovery of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to an off-duty Texas Highway Patrol officer.

Clint Schumacher was shot in the abdomen in the home of another off-duty trooper on the 600 block of Rhonda Street in Italy around 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.

Ellis County Sherriff’s Office reported details of how the shooting occurred are still unknown, but preliminary reports show it was accidental.

Flown by CareFlight to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, reports state Schumacher had a successful surgery with nothing life-threatening.

The trooper has since been released and is in stable condition.
