Texas National Guard and reserve members - give thanks this Thanksgiving
National Guard and Reserve members and families eligible to nominate supportive employers for Secretary of Defense award
ARLINGTON, Va. – Members of the National Guard and Reserve and their families across Texas are encouraged to thank supportive employers this Thanksgiving by nominating them for the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve. While Americans are reflecting on what they are thankful for, Guard and Reserve members have the unique opportunity to say thanks to employers by nominating them for this prestigious award. Texas is one of the top 12 states and territories with the highest numbers of nominations to date. In addition to honoring 15 employers this year, 2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the SECDEF Employer Support Freedom Award.
Nominations will be accepted at www.FreedomAward.mil through January 18, 2010. National Guard and Reserve members and their families are eligible and encouraged to nominate employers that have provided exceptional support to military employees beyond the federal law requirements. Award nominees will be announced in mid winter 2010 and the 15 recipients will be announced in early summer.
Almost one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the National Guard and Reserve. The Department of Defense shares these citizen warriors with their civilian employers, many of whom provide significant support to their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.
The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense Agency, to recognize exceptional support from the employer community. In the past 14 years, 130 organizations from across the nation have received this prestigious award. Established in 1972, ESGR’s mission is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflicts through mediation.
