DeSoto Chamber honors Community Icon Ruben Esquivel with Roast & Toast
DESOTO, TEXAS – Aug.31, 2009 – The DeSoto Chamber of Commerce is adding a new face to its annual Roast and Toast event.
The Chamber is rolling out the red carpet to roast one of North Texas’ most influential community icons - Ruben Esquivel.
This Caribbean cruise-themed event will be held at Edison’s, located at 1724 Cockrell Avenue in Dallas, on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
"I'm thrilled to be doing this for the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce . It is an honor to be celebrated by so many in this community I love and respect," said Esquivel. Ruben Esquivel is a wonderful community leader, who has given so much to us,” said Cammy Jackson, DeSoto Chamber of Commerce president.
"He has such an inspiring story of hardship and triumph that we all can learn from," Jackson continued. Ruben Esquivel, who is currently the Vice President for Community and Corporate Relations of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas since 1995, is a native of Cuba.
Esquivel’s career began at age 18 as an assembler with AVO International Inc, a full service provider of test and measurement equipment for electrical power applications. While working full time he attended college at night and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and completed graduate courses in business administration at Rutgers University and The University of Texas at Arlington. His work at AVO culminated in being named President and CEO of the company in 1985 and Vice Chairman in 1994.
The DeSoto Chamber’s 4th Annual Roast & Toast is co-chaired by Michael Korpiel, VP Operations for Methodist Dallas Medical Center and 2009 Chairman of the Board of the DeSoto Chamber, and Eve Williams, President of Dikita Enterprises and Secretary/Treasurer for the DeSoto Chamber. Korpiel stated, “We chose Esquivel as our honoree this year for many reasons, including the fact that he was the 1979 Chairman of the Board for the DeSoto Chamber, and the Chamber named him Citizen of the Year for 2008”. Williams, who has chaired the annual Roast for the past 2 years added that Esquivel was also on the Board of Trustees for DeSoto ISD for a number of years.
Event organizers also include former Mayor Michael Hurtt (former Chairman of the Board for the DeSoto Chamber and 2007 Roast honoree), Curtistene McCowan (2008 Roast honoree) and Alina Esquivel. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the Cuban Jazz Project.
Roasters include Dr. Ron Anderson, CEO of Parkland Health System, Dr. Wright Lassiter, Chancellor of Dallas County Community College District, Alina Esquivel and son David Esquivel, Roy Orr and Dan Eddy.
