Senior Center board lowers age

Board members for the Waxahachie Senior Center recently voted to lower the age requirements for membership at the facility to 50. The previous age requirement was 55.

The Board began discussing lowering the age requirement earlier this month based on research done by its members. “The AARP age requirement is 50, and most other senior centers in the area are 50 as well,” said Senior Center Director Cindi Schneider.

Another reason is to encourage membership and increase activity among our community’s senior population. “Being an active senior is not something that begins on the first day of retirement. Beginning your preparation at 50, with a membership at the senior center, only improves your chance for becoming an active senior at 80, 90, or even 100,” said Board member Mike Lee.

In addition to the lower age requirement, spouses of persons age 50 or older are also be eligible for membership.

Membership dues are $25 per year, and include many daily activities from cards and games to exercise programs and much more.

The Senior Center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The second and fourth Tuesdays of each month the facility stays open late until 9:30 for the dances.

The Waxahachie Senior Center is located at 122 Park Hills Drive in Waxahachie. For more information, please call 972-937-8271.
