Fatal Accident
PALMER – A collision between two 18-wheelers on Interstate 45 around 3:59 a.m. Monday left one driver dead.
The accident occured at mile marker 260 near Palmer.
Each driver was operating a Freightliner tractor-trailer at the time of the accident.
The driver of the northbound rig, Oguejiofor Nwabulke, swerved causing his tractor-trailer to go through the median into the southbound lanes and collided with a southbound tractor-trailer.
The accident resulted in the fatality of 46-year-old Mark Anthony Lewis, the driver of the southbound rig.
"Witnesses say it looked like the vehicle traveling northbound swerved to miss something and hit Mr. Lewis’ 18-wheeler, however, it is still under investigation," said John Zaidle, chief of police.
It was reported Lewis was killed instantly from multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:58 a.m.
"I do not know if any charges are to be filed," said Zaidle.
Nwabulke was taken to Ennis Regional Medical center where he was later transported to a Dallas hospital.
"The other driver [Nwabulke] was treated of lacerations to his arm and released from the hospital," said Zaidle.
