WAXAHACHIE – A Sanctity of Human Life Week in Ellis County proclamation was unanimously approved for Jan.18 – 24, during the Jan.12 meeting of the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court . Donna Young, executive director of the Women’s Resource Pregnancy Center, thanked the Court for its support in reminding the citizens of Ellis County of the value and dignity of human life.
Shirley Mizzell, Women’s Resource Pregnancy Center Director; Jami Hogan, Director of Acts of Love Adoption Services; and Mackie Owens, executive director of HOPE Clinic, also attended in support of the proclamation.
"The center served 577 women, gave 450 pregnancy tests and had more than 2,000 client visits by women ranging in age from 13-50 in 2008," said Young, noting the center continues to offer the "earn while you learn" program where clients can earn items for their children by completing learning assignments.
One new service being offered by the Center this year is a post-abortion Bible study to help bring healing to women who are suffering the after-effects of abortion, and there is a cooperative effort between the Center, Hope Clinic, and Baylor Women’s Health to provide free pre-natal & childbirth classes.
Young said in addition to Sunday, Jan.18, being Sanctity of Life Sunday, there will also be a gathering on the lawn of the courthouse for prayer at noon on Jan. 22 in remembrance of the anniversary of Rowe v. Wade. That evening there will be a "spirit night" at Chick-fil-A.
The Court appointed Allen Lane to the Avalon Emergency Service District #8 Board of Directors and Douglas W. Young to the Palmer Emergency Service District #9 Board of Directors, each to serve a regular two-year term, effective Jan. 12, 2009 through Dec. 31, 2010.
Each prospective board member was asked to give a short personal biography and then to answer a few of the questions from the newly-adopted questionnaire for volunteers. After the Court voted to approve their appointments, the men were sworn in by County Judge Chad Adams.
"Gentlemen, we appreciate your service to the community," he said.
After hearing testimony from both sides during a prior meeting of the Court, Commissioners unanimously denied a proposal for a slaughterhouse at the location of 620 Greathouse Road in Precinct 3. A number of landowners were present during Monday’s meeting but did not speak.
In calling for the denial, Commissioner Heath Sims, pct. 3, said the request was incompatible with the existing land use in the area.
