Ferris to dedicate campus Saturday

FERRIS – The Yellow Jackets will have a new nest to play and learn in starting Saturday.
All 240,000 square feet of it.
Designed, constructed and this weekend, dedicated, from the 2005 bond election, Ferris ISD officials cut the ribbon on the facility at 1 p.m. at the campus on East 8th St.
The building is designed to accommodate 1,200 students and staff, which will pave the way for Ferris’ future entry into Class 4A, the second-to-last student population category (for athletic reasons, Ferris is in Class 3A; classifications are based on student enrollment.)
With 65 classrooms, a vocational agricultural facility and athletic field house, school officials said the new high school was constructed for $149.33 per square foot.
The old Ferris High School, located a block away, will house the junior high.
The cost from the bond package approved three years ago includes the sidewalks and parking, six tennis courts, three practice fields for the football and soccer teams and band, as well as landscaping, furniture and computers and technology.
It is the technological aspect that has many school officials in surrounding areas buzzing. Wireless Internet "hot spots" (laptops not included) will be available all over the campus, which Ferris officials say will help provide for a safe, warm and friendly learning environment.
Students are encouraged, school officials said, to bring their laptops.
Trustees Thomas Griffith, Robert Scott Jr., Elizabeth Munoz, Bobby Lindsey, Lee Longino, Jorge Lopez and Duane Yee will be on hand with FHS construction supervisor Billy Fulton and Dale Rabe of the Rabe + Partners architectural firm in the cafeteria.
Guided tours will be given after a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m.
A Ferris ISD facilities committee helped recommend the bond package to voters. Members include: Terry Murdock, Rebecca Pugh, Roger Tatum, Mike Bartis, Bill Dunn, Maria Nunez, Tawny Abalos, Gerald Tyler, Ricky Walker, T.J. Sims, Steve Freeman, Marty Renner, Steve Nalley, Ron Smith, Randall Willis, Alice Selman, Eddie Duran, Ruth Scott, Matt Craig, Linda Hulgan, Shannon Savell, Peggy Spurgeon, Earline Jackson, Nadine Thursby, Anthony Spears, Jana Giles, Mike Bodine and Ofelia Grass.
