Firemen: Police chief was in middle of road, passed out

BARDWELL – Three volunteer firemen told citizens at an April 7 city council meeting they noticed Bardwell Police Chief Michael Spurgeon in his squad car in the middle of Ensign Road last month, apparently passed out.

The firemen reported responding to a call on the night of March 15, only to be roadblocked by Spurgeon’s squad car. Spurgeon, in the same council meeting, didn’t respond to the accusations.

Firemen said they activated both the wig-wags (a flashing emergency vehicle headlight system) as well as the horn on more than one occasion in attempts to wake up Spurgeon.

They said after a short time, Spurgeon lifted his chin from his chest and woke up.  He remained in his squad car even after the firemen left.

Spurgeon, who was reportedly seen by resident Lester Hammond drinking alcohol while on duty with Mayor P.W. Gentry, was praised by citizens when the firemen brought forth their accusations in front of the standing room-only crowd at city hall. Some residents said they didn’t believe the accusations.

Spurgeon, whose wife works at city hall, admitted at the end of the meeting he had been using the city’s squad car tax dollars for personal use while working off-duty security outside the City of Bardwell.
