RED OAK - Fred's Steakhouse in downtown Red Oak did not pay its waiters and now parents are upset.
Misty McCuller and other parents of Red Oak football players who were employed there walked into the former Salmon Creek Grille in October demanding payment for their sons' work.
Checks written previously to them bounced, causing new owner Randy Shelly to fire both the manager and assistant manager.
Shelly, who took control of Fred's after a foreclosure on the previous owner, said he is still owed $28,000 and that the former employees, all starters on the recent Red Oak playoff team, are not owed anything else.
'A couple of parents came in and made a scene,' Shelly said. 'They pulled the kids out of working, but we paid the kids two pay periods.'
McCuller's son was paid, but is still owed one more check, his mom said. Shelly described Fred's as having gone broke, but that checks written from the new company's bank account - Citizens National Bank - have not bounced, only the account from the previous owner (Wachovia).
Still, McCuller and other parents said by assuming the liabilities of the old Fred's Steakhouse, money is still owed to the former employees.
