PALMER - Officer Chris Mendez lost control of his squad car early Saturday morning, crashing into Leland's right off the I-45 service road and Jefferson Street outside
Palmer, close to the bank and US Post Office.
Mendez had just came on duty when he began the pursuit of a traffic violator.
Coming down the I-45 service road while picking up speed, he lost control and plunged into Leland's storage buildings on display.
Trooper William Werkmeis-ter from the Texas Highway Patrol was on site Saturday morning investigating the crash which damaged three of owner Gary Scott's storage buildings.
Scott said he was distraught by the destruction of approximately $8,000 of his storage buildings and spent several hours Saturday cleaning up the debris.
Mendez was taken by CareFlite to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, but was released around noon on Sunday.
Werkmeister said, 'I have a pretty good idea of what happened.' He said Mendez was traveling 'well above the speed limit, but he was in the performance of his duties.'
Initial reports said Mendez may have hit a slick spot under the overpass, but the accident was still under investigation by Werkmeister who said he had up to ten days to file his report.
Palmer Police Chief Scott Lynch said, 'I spoke with officer Mendez and other than being really sore, he is all right.'
Lynch said the city was fully covered through the Texas Municipal League for accidents.
