ENNIS - Court Appointed Special Advocates of Ellis County will be hosting a pro rodeo event Oct. 20-21 at 8 p.m., both nights at the Ennis Rodeo Grounds, otherwise known as Walker Ranch in Ennis off of Interstate 45 on 1201 Crist Road.

Rhodie Rawls, executive director of CASA, said they were approached by Ennis City Commissioner Byron Walker who offered the use of his ranch to hold a rodeo to benefit the organization.

Professional rodeo athletes, male and female, would compete in bullriding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc, barrel racing and more.

The pig-kissing contest Saturday night involving several well-known Ellis County attorneys would be a sight to see, according to organizers. There would also be a silent auction.

CASA has been established in Ellis County for two years and this would be the first year for the rodeo benefit.

CASA, a nonprofit agency, training and supporting volunteers to speak for the best interest of abused and neglected children.

Volunteers advocate in the court system for family reunification or placement in a safe, nurturing and permanent environment.

Volunteers continue to work with these children as they journey toward safe, loving and stable homes.

CASA, in every state in the United States and 65 counties in Texas said they have more than 75,000 trained volunteers, but need many more.

In 2004 there were more than 700 investigations of child abuse or neglect in Ellis County. At least 121 children have been removed from those situations.

Funds raised from the rodeo would be used to recruit and train new volunteers said Rawls.

CASA said volunteers were recruited from all walks of life.

They come from all ethnic, financial and educational backgrounds.

October would be a very busy month for the organization, according to Rawls.

'We have been the proud recipients of four spectacular playhouses donated by area Home Depot stores.'

Designed and built by store employees, there is a log cabin, a castle, Noah's Ark and an aquarium.

Raffle tickets were for sale for $5 each and winning tickets would be drawn on Nov. 10, according to CASA.

The various playhouses would be displayed Saturday, Oct. 14, beside Burger King in Waxahachie.

Displays would also be available Oct. 20 at the Midlothian Fall Festival, Oct. 20-21 at the Pro Rodeo Benefit and Oct. 28 at the Bob Phillips' Texas Country Reporter Festival.
