FERRIS - Work by the Texas Department of Transportation has begun on the Fifth and Eighth Street underpasses to beautify the area within the city limits.
Mayor Jimmie Birdwell said he was really excited about the program and said the 'state is paying for all of it.'
New trees and shrubs will be planted along the Interstate Highway 45 service roads after irrigation systems are installed.
The underpasses and corners will be repaved with new concrete, according to TxDOT.
Colored texturized concrete will be designed to look like bricks to honor the city's heritage, Birdwell said.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in February of 2004 with a project cost of $239,633.
