HUTCHINS - Thanks to a global positioning system, an 82-year-old Arlington man was reunited with his family Wednesday evening, Oct. 22 after Hutchins Police Corporal Bill Adams found him driving around Hutchins in his white 2003 Cadillac Deville, apparently lost.
Adams said Charles Hawkins, who suffers from Alzheimer's, told him he was trying to get to Fort Worth.
Hutchins Police Dispatcher Sam Comadoll said at 4:42 p.m. he received a call from OnStar, a GPS system informing them of Hawkins disappearance.
Comadoll kept an OnStar representative on the line while Adams tracked the man to a dead end road at the Dallas County Sheriff's Substation on Langdon Road.
The GPS tracking system is accurate within 50 feet of the vehicle, Comadoll said.
'If it wasn't for OnStar I don't know where we would have found him,' Hawkins' wife Gloria said.
