RED OAK - A 16-year-old unidentified sophomore student at Red Oak High School committed suicide on the campus on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 7.
She was found by a fellow student after hanging herself in a school restroom.
The female student was taken to Lancaster Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival, as stated in a statement issued by Red Oak Independent School District.
School personnel performed life saving efforts until the Red Oak Fire Department and East Texas Ambulance service personnel could arrive.
'Trained district and campus crisis management teams have reported to the high school gym to assist students and staff as needed,' according to the formal statement from the school district.
The memo said counselors and local ministers would be available to work with students, staff, and faculty to help them through this situation.
Dr. Miles Broughton, ROISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel said the student was accompanied to the hospital by a parent and a member of the school district.
The district cancelled all after school athletic events following the tragedy.
The ROISD police department is still investigating the incident, according to Broughton.
