AVALON - The Avalon school district officially opened their monolithic dome multipurpose center Nov. 14.

The dome is the second monolithic dome to open in Texas this year.

Italy High School, just miles outside of Avalon, is home to the other dome.

Monolithic domes are one-piece, steel-reinforced concrete structures that are known for their energy efficiency and longevity.

'When you add the savings on construction costs to the reduced energy bills, the Monolithic Dome is just a great choice,' said Avalon Superintendent David Del Bosque.

'We are pleased to have come in under the projected budget and ahead of schedule on completing construction.'

The Avalon building measures 124 feet in diameter and is constructed on constructed on 12-foot stemwalls.

It features a full-size gymnasium and four locker rooms, and replaces the school district's old gym, which will now used as a physical education facility.

'I have never installed the sound system at the Avalon facility,' said Porter Falcon.

'I have never measured a gym of any kind that is as well set up for sound as the Avalon gym.

'It is fantastic for the spoken word and music.'
