PALMER - With no fanfare, Henry Marvin Rhoades resigned his elected office as mayor of Palmer.
Palmer City Administrator Scott Albert reported the mayor turned in his official resignation and resigned his office effective Dec. 17.
Albert said, 'The mayor bought a small farm and moved to the community of Rice.'
He further explained under the law, the mayor is required to be a legal resident of the community to hold office.
He said under the circumstances the mayor had no option but to resign his office.
During the scheduled council meeting on Tuesday night, Jan.15, the city council voted unanimously in favor of holding an election on May 4, to select a successor.
Also on the ballot will be three council seats, which are up for election.
Council members facing reelection are Roy Bobo, Jennifer Thomas and Joice Price.
When Roy Bobo was asked if he was going to seek reelection, the councilman let it be known he was contemplating running for the office of mayor.
'I would like to be around long enough to see the water project finished. I think one more term in office would see it through to completion,' he said.
