WAXAHACHIE - County Commissioners approved a list of 11 committee members and four alternates for a Re-Districting Advisory Committee in a special meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Committee members are Maurice Osborn, Midlothian; Floy Poe, Waxahachie; Lynn Hill, Red Oak; Diane Thredgill, Midlothian; Betty Jefferson, Waxahachie; Albert Garcia, Italy; Paula Baucum, Midlothian; Robert McKenzie, Waxahachie; Jo Ann Jenkins, Ovilla; Robert E. (Bob) Erisman, Ennis; and Martin Zapletal, Ennis.

Alternates are David Ritchie, Ennis; Conard Yeats, Waxahachie; Tom Abram, Ennis; and Gary Wimbish, Milford.

'They will submit their findings to the Commissioners' Court by March 15,' said County Judge Al Cornelius.

'They are going to have to start meeting pretty soon - next week it looks like.'

Cornelius said the committee would hold open meetings in each precinct to solicit public input on the re-drawing of precinct lines.

'That's the whole purpose,' he said. 'Each commissioner will select a location (to hold the meeting.)'

Cornelius said the precincts should be drawn to ensure balanced representation for citizens, based primarily on numbers of residents.

Victor Burnett, president of the Waxahachie Branch of the NAACP, said he had some concerns about the way committee members were chosen.

'McKenzie said at Juneteenth celebration, before the commissioners' meeting, that he was serving on the board,' Burnett said.

Burnett also felt there was inadequate representation for the east side of the county.

'I want to know who is representing Box 106, which has 3,500 voters,' he said.
