Red Oak - Ryan Lazenby, 16, of Red Oak accidentally drowned May 29 while swimming with friends in a pond at a local rock quarry. Divers from fire departments in Red Oak and Waxahachie searched the pond following the tragic incident and found young Lazenby´s body below the surface of the water.
According to a report with the Ellis County Sheriff´s Office, witnesses said Lazenby and four companions unlawfully entered the private property near the 1700 block of Stainback and were already in the pond when Paul Fehmel, the property owner, discovered them.
Reportedly, Fehmel confronted the youths and told them to leave the pond and not to trespass in the future. When the swimmers exited the water, they discovered Lazenby was missing. Lazenby could not be located, and the Ellis County Sheriff´s Office and area emergency units were summoned to the scene. Divers reported Lazenby was tangled in moss, which held him underwater until he drowned.
