FERRIS – Topic of discussion during Monday, March 2 Planning and Zoning board brought suggestion of alcohol to the table by Councilman Billy Don Dunn.
"I know mentioning this will be a hot topic, but with Red Oak going wet probably here soon every city around us will have beer and wine packaged to go," said Dunn.
"I see no reason to see if we can’t get this in the future."
Dunn explained the city’s only sales tax right now is generated from food.
While Dunn isn’t looking for any "honkey tonks, bars and clubs" he explained there isn’t any reason why future revenue from the sales of alcohol at local restaurants couldn’t generate future revenue and boost the economy of the city as a whole.
In order to get beer and wine in the city, citizens would need to start a petition and get the required number of signatures – a percent of the last general election- and return it to the Elections Administration Office in Waxahachie.
From there, you would need to have the item placed on the council agenda and further approved by the county commissioners to hold a Local Option Election in the city.
