RED OAK – Defense lawyer Rodney Pat Ramsey will take on longtime incumbent Ron Brown in the Republican Party primary for county commissioner.
Ramsey, who ran for county/district attorney in 2008, will campaign in the Precinct 4 seat Brown has held since 1991.
Precinct 4 stretches from Red Oak to the far western side of Midlothian and the extreme northern portions of Ellis County, with dips down south of Highway 287 in Waxahachie.
Browns last primary challenger was four years ago. Since Precinct 4 has been historically Republican, no Democrat or third-party candidate has sought the office.
"The office of county commissioner handles a number of services, but the two main jobs are to make sure the county roads are the best they can be, and to make sure county tax dollars are spent wisely," Brown said. "We have over 180 miles of county roads in Precinct 4, and they are some of the best roads in Ellis County."
Both natives of Red Oak, Ramsey, who ran for county judge in 2002 in the GOP primary, wants to stress limited government, lower taxes and a control on spending.
"My platform is simple," Ramsey said. "I believe in limited government, individual freedoms, lower taxes, an open door policy and conservative Christian values. If elected I will do everything within my power to be a responsible steward of your tax dollars and will oppose any attempts to expand the power of local government into your property rights."
Filing for countywide or precinct-level offices for Republican, Democratic and Libertarian candidates begin Dec. 4 and end Jan. 4. The primary is Tuesday, March 2.
