OVILLA – Chief Mike Moon of Ovilla Police Department is working on "heavier patrols" because the increase of burglaries is on the rise across the county.
Sheriff Johnny Brown of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, reported for the past two weeks, a huge influx of break -ins.
"I am just working with all the agencies, issuing alerts and having my team out patrolling all the back roads in and around the area," said Brown.
Suspects have been breaking into barns, sheds, out-buildings and houses stealing saddles, lawn equipment, ATV’s and four wheelers from the out buildings.
When breaking into homes, suspects look for any unlocked/open windows or doors and if a door isn’t unlocked, they will kick one open.
"So far, we in Ovilla are fortunate enough that we have not had any burglaries," said Chief Moon.
To help keep burglars out of the city, here are a few tips to help from not being a victim :
• When leaving your residence, close and lock all doors and windows.
• Set your alarm system.
• Do not leave anything out in the yard where it can be easily seen and taken.
• If you are at home, try to keep your garage door closed unless you are right there with it.
Thieves like to take things out of open garages, even with people being at home.
• Any time you see someone or something suspicious, call the Ovilla PD at 972-723-9910 and give them as much information as you can so the officers can check on it. If it is suspicious to you, then it is worth checking on. You could also call 911 to get dispatch.
"We are on heavy patrol throughout the neighborhoods looking for any suspicious activity," said Moon.
