FERRIS – Howard Andrew (Moggie) Mogensen, 87, died Feb. 11, following a three vehicle accident on FM 664 and the intersection Ferris Road.
High traffic was attributed to the death of Morgenson and one unidentified female being sent to the hospital with no serious injuries.
The coroners report stated Morgensen’s cause of death was due to blunt force trauma, not a heart attack.
"Apparently he [Morgensen] was coming eastbound and was unable to stop in time for a vehicle attempting to turn left on Ferris Road," said Chief Frank Mooney.
Ferris Police Department, Ferris Fire Department, Red Oak PD, Wilmer PD and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.
Born June 6, 1921 in Carroll, Neb. to Andrew Hans Mogensen and Ella Margaret Mogensen, is survived by his wife Edith and children.
His son Hans Mogensen of Port Orchard, Wash. , daughter Rita McClellan, Omaha, Neb., daughter Sonja Hill, Rowlett and son Dan Papaila, San Diego, Calif..
Also granddaughter, Kelly Hill, Dallas, grandson, George Hill, Plano, granddaughter Riann
Papaila, San Diego and grandson Dustin McClellan, Omaha, Neb.
Moggie served in the U.S. Navy from 1942, to his honorable discharge in 1946, at the rank of Seaman First Class V6, from Virgina.
He was one of the fortunate ones to return home from World War II as the ship he was on was hit and sunk by a Japanese sub patroling the waters of the south Pacific. The crew was rescued shortly afterwards by another U.S. ship in the area
He retired from Operating Engineers Union in Omaha, Neb. and ending his career a boilermaker.
Moggie, AKA the "Lawnmower Man" was well known and liked around Ferris and India. There were few lawnmowers or other gas powered lawn equipment Moggie hadn’t worked on in the area.
He will be greatly missed by all his friends he had made since moving to Ferris in early 1987. There was a Wake held in his honor this Wed. at the Ferris Masonic Lodge in Ferris, to celebrate is long, long....., cantankerous life.
He recently received a 50 year pin from the Masonic Lodge, presented to him at the Ferris Lodge.
Several friends in the area started a petition late last year to have Askew Lane, where he lived changed,to Moggie Lane. The petition was submitted to Pct. 1 Commissioner Dennis Robinson and the name was accepted. Commissioner Robinson sent a letter to the individuals arting the petition stated the name would be changed and Moggie was able to see the letter before he died.
