FERRIS – A policy enacted
Dec. 19 by Ferris Police Chief Frank Mooney call for officers to shoot “feral
dogs,” according to an internal memo sent to all employees of FPD.
“Complaints about numerous
wild feral dogs in the City of Ferris have reached a point where they have
become a nuisance and a danger to the general public,” the memo states, which
features Mooney’s initial near his full name.
Mooney, who recently was
hired from Jacksboro, Texas, called on his officers to shoot the dogs with
shotguns “with slug rounds.”
“If there are not enough
slug rounds in the vehicles, please let me know and I will get more rounds,”
the memo states.
Mooney’s memo also advises
his officers to ensure the dogs are not shot in locations that would harm
individuals or residents’ property.
“Once the animal is
killed, Animal Control will be called to dispose of the carcass,” the memo
states. Mooney could not be
reached for comment, but Ferris City Manager David Chavez said the policy is
needed due to numerous complaints.
“I’m going to take heat one way or
the other,” Chavez said, “but if we get a handle on this now, we [might not run
into trouble] in the future.
“Do
we want to wait until someone gets bit with rabies and then asks questions
later?”
Chavez said the policy is defined as
feral dogs meaning those without collars and those specifically traveling in
packs.

If you think you have problems now, wait until you kill someone's family pet by accident.
Animal control had advanced beyond this type of animal management. Please get yourselves some training.
Invest in some dog traps, maybe?December 30th, 2008 Jill
there wouldn't be a problem if the dog officer did their job--- and what happens if someones pet gets out, will they be shot on site because they have no collar on -- what century are we in-- oh i forgot its the town of ferris the land that time forgot.December 26th, 2008 Bob
What kind of comparison is that Melody about killing stray kids in case they have AIDS? If an animal has rabies, the various stages in the disease will cause the animal to attack and harm any other animal ( or person ) by either the damage from the attack or the spread of the disease. Last I checked, ANY stage of the AIDS virus will not cause the victims to attack like a wild animal. Now, who needs to pull what out of where? You seem like the same person who say that the animals are not to blame for attacking and mutilating a child in a vicious attack. While the statement itself is true ( as it is in the case of wild, feral dogs in Ferris; blame the irresponsible humans that get them in the first place ) about animals attacks through training or disease, that fact will not stop me from putting a bullet it that blameless animal to keep from injuring a person. That include preventive measures to keep adults and children from being harmed. I don't equate killing wild dogs to killing homeless or AIDS children to Hitler tactics. Unless in your bizzarro world, AIDS kids or homeless people now have the potential of hunting down and killing smaller animals or hurting people. I'd put a little more thought into your comparisons.December 24th, 2008 Melody
What if there is a stray child, should we shoot it in case it has AIDS???? Chavez should pull his big, stupid, ignorant head out of his ass, and look for a solution versus this HITLER style elimination! Way to fucking go Adolf! How about the homeless, are they next? Let's just approve shooting EVERYONE! YOU SUCK!
