WILMER – Registered sex
offender James Brian Sliter’s name is still on the mayoral ballot, and though
he withdrew from the race several weeks ago, he could still get enough votes to
win the race.
Crystol
Birdwell, the city secretary in the town that made international headlines for
Sliter’s entry – and exit – in the race, said Sliter could still pull off a
win.
Sliter,
in a letter announcing his withdrawal, spoke of the negotiations he and his
attorney made that ended his campaign, but Birdwell said because it was after
the deadline to remove his name from the ballot, the candidate could still win.
“It’s
very possible, very possible he could still win,” Birdwell said.
Incumbent
Mayor Don Hudson and Teresa Bain are actively seeking the mayoral post,
Birdwell said, but Sliter was given a public endorsement by Hudson’s predecessor,
Linda Root, whom Hudson defeated two years ago after Root and a political faction
of supporters sued The Ellis County Press
for alleged libel. They lost the suit.
During
the trial in Dallas County district court, Root’s most vocal supporter – John Eggen
-admitted he was in legal trouble several years ago for male prostitution in a
case from Florida.
