Red Oak High School swim team halfway through 2008-09 season

ADVERTISEMENTS

RED OAK - The Hawks swim team, in its third season, is about half way through their 2008-2009 season.

What started out as seven athletes has grown to 17 athletes in three short years.

Currently there are no try outs required as the team is still fairly small, but athletes must be able to swim 25 yards without stopping.

With the number of new swimmers this season, the Hawks are now able to compete in all the different events.

The new swimmers will also play a vital role in the teams’ success at the district meet in February.

The athletes are working very hard and are excited about this year with a goal to win the District Championship.

Speaking of hard work, the swim season starts in September and runs until February and their practices consist of a morning conditioning program called "drylands."

Before school starts the swimmers workout on the track, football field and gym every day.

After school they swim at the Duncanville Natatorium.

The school supplies all the equipment except goggles.

The swimmers are coached by Gretchen Gnoza, who hopes a pool will be built at either the high school or in the community very soon so the swimmers don’t have to travel as much for practices.

The ROHS Swim team recently competed in the Tri-City swim meet in Duncanville and these are the results as provided by Coach Gnoza and be sure to check out the video slide show at the Athletic Zone (http://sports.hawkeye-news.com) or visit the ROISD web site and click on Athletic Zone.
