What happens in the physical realm is a shadow of what happens in the spiritual realm.
As Wendy sewed Peter Pan’s shadow back onto his feet, so we need to sew our spiritual fiber back onto our physical selves.
We currently live in a culture of physical focus and overindulgence.
We have everything we could possibly want or need available at a click of the finger.
However, the shadow of our irresponsibility looms and people are beginning to consider the consequences.
In the past year, our government representatives, who are morally representative of our people as a whole, have managed to take control of almost everything from banking to housing to transportation and food.
What will be the ramifications for this coming year?
The prophet Amos envisions a basket of ripe fruit in Amos 8, but the basket will not be given as food to the people of Israel; rather, God announces that the basket of ripe fruit marks the time for the judgment of Israel.
God has seen that they "trample the needy, do away with the poor of the land," and go through the motions of religious behavior while they wait impatiently for the holy days to end so they can continue cheating their customers (Amos 8:4-6).
They, like us, are living in a time of material and spiritual prosperity, but are ignoring their spiritual responsibilities.
We currently enjoy freedom of worship in the United States, we have more (unread) Bibles available than ever before in history, and we have easy access to teachings, information and research via the Internet.
Ye we as a nation have chosen to ignore God, to go our own way, and to give spirituality a nod only when it profits us in some selfish way.
This time of abundance is nearing the end. It is time to build our spiritual storehouses.
As we enter 2010 conscious of a potential increase in economic difficulties in the physical realm, we should consider the possibility that the spiritual abundance we now enjoy may soon disappear.
Amos 8:11 says, "The days are coming, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I will send a famine through the land – not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD."
