Waxahachie - SAGU’s Women’s Basketball team came into their Saturday night contest with #22 Southern Nazarene on a five game win streak. This is the best start for the ladies program since the program began in 1997 with a 7-0 start.
Friday night the Lady Lions narrowly defeated Central Baptist College 60-57 to extend the streak to five games. Now the nationally ranked Crimson Storm stood in their way of extending the win streak to six games.
The Crimson Storm started early to show why they are nationally ranked, hitting two three pointers to take the lead as the gates opened and with 8:20 left in the half, SNU led 20-8.
Then Rachel Harris entered the game and hit four of five three pointers to propel SAGU on a 12-0 run and the game was tied at 20-20 with 4:36 remaining in the half.
After that, the tide turned back toward Southern Nazarene who then went on an 11-4 run which took them into the locker room with a 31-24 advantage over SAGU.
With 11:08 left in the second half, Southern Nazarene held a 12 point lead over SAGU, 41-29. When Michelle Michener made a lay-up with 7:50 left in the game, SAGU capped a 9-1 run and cut the lead to four points, trailing 42-38.
Three more times the Lady Lions would cut the lead down to six points, down 48-42 with 3:18 left in the game.
But Southern Nazarene keep moving the finish line further and further away and when time ran out, the Lady Lions had fallen to the Crimson Storm, 56-47.
With 12 points each, Chelsea Jones and Rachel Harris led SAGU in points. Michelle Michener finished as the high lady in rebounds with seven and Heather Jefferson recorded six assists on the night.
Tuesday SAGU will head to Moore, Okla. with a rematch against Hillsdale Baptist College whom the Lady Lions defeated 70-30 on opening night. The Lady Lions will attempt to move their record to six wins and one loss, the best start since 1997.
