COMMERCE – The Ferris Jackets’ regional qualifiers in track, both boys and girls, competed in Commerce this past weekend.
There were 13 Jackets in all and every one of them represented their school well.
For the boys it was strictly running events in which there were qualifiers. Kyle Jernigan, a junior, ran in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.35. He was just beat out of advancing to the finals by less than a tenth of a second.
Sophomore James Hopkins ran in the 100 meter dash and earned a medal by placing sixth with a time of 11.48.
There were also three relays the boys competed in. Hopkins, Jimbo Southard, Paul Alexander and Ryan Kidwill were all in the 400 meter relay and the 800 meter relay.
They ran the 400 meter relay in 44.75 and the 800 meter relay in 1:33.68. The 1600 meter relay consisted of Kidwill, Alexander, Tanner Bodine and Tevin Richard.
They finished the relay in 3:33.96. Despite their best efforts they failed to make the finals in any of the relays.
None of the boys who qualified for regionals are seniors, so expect to hear more from them next year. The girls, who have three seniors out of their five qualifiers, were a little more successful than the boys.
They placed fifth in the 1600 meter relay, which was made up by Jamie Hopkins (James’ older sister), Tiffany Carey, Magan Markgraf and Jordyn Ogle, with a time of 4:09.93.
Hopkins, a senior, also placed fifth in the 100 meter dash. Her time in the finals was 12.64.
The squad competed in the 1600 meter relay also ran in the 800 meter relay. They finished with a time of 1:47.38.
The lone qualifier in a field event for boys and girls was Jasmine West who competed in shot put. Her best throw of the day was 34 feet 8 inches.
