FERRIS – For the third straight year the Ferris Lady Jackets (25-6) are district champions.
In a one game playoff against the Crandall Lady Pirates to decide the first round bye for the playoffs, Ferris steamrolled their way to a 6-1 victory and a three-peat as district champs.
They used a trio of one run innings and a three run home-run by Marissa Koetting to earn the victory. Crandall’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lady Jackets made a pair of errors which gave up the run and created a 1-0 deficit.
Ferris didn’t waste any time striking back. They evened the game right back up at one a piece the following inning.
Samantha Duran got on base with a single and Kaytlin Griffith followed her up with an RBI double to score her.
Ferris took the lead in the third inning off a Lady Pirate mistake.
Carol Galindo reached first base on a Crandall error and the Lady Jackets took advantage.
Lauren Biffle and Maggie Sands hit back-to-back singles to score the go ahead run.
Sands also hit a single in the fifth inning and eventually scored off of a Koetting double, one of her four RBI’s of the night.
In the top of the seventh with the score now 3-1 in the Lady Jackets’ favor, Ferris was looking for an insurance run.
Well if you can’t get one you might as well get three.
Renee Brown led off the inning with a base hit and Sands followed her up with yet another single of her own.
Koetting outdid both of them by blasting a three run homerun. The shot effectively ended any hopes Crandall had of a comeback.
The next item on the Lady Jackets’ agenda is the first playoff game of the year.
They will face the White Oak Lady Roughnecks on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. at Canton High School. It will be a two out of three series with the final two games on the following Saturday.
