Twenty-one Texas law officers—including two DPS Highway Patrol officers—who lost their lives on duty in 2010 and 2011 were remembered and honored today during the DPS Memorial Service at the Texas Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Austin.

The 21 officers honored during the roll call was an increase from 12 at last year’s service.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst was the guest speaker at the ceremony, one of the many across the nation honoring fallen law enforcement officers during National Police Week.

Highway Patrol Corporal David Slaton, stationed in Bowie, died in an on-duty crash Sept. 20 last year in Montague County.  Less than two months later, on Nov. 15, Trooper Jonathan McDonald died in an on-duty crash south of Post, where he was stationed. Slaton and McDonald were the 84th and 85th DPS officers to die in the line of duty. Their widows—Lynetta Slaton and Laura McDonald—placed the memorial wreath at the ceremony.

“This is always a difficult event, and more so this year because we are remembering two of our own who gave their lives protecting the citizens of Texas,” said DPS Director Steven C. McCraw.  “Those honored today, including Corporal Slaton and Trooper McDonald, will never be forgotten for their service and their sacrifice.  Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.”
