Eastbound and Westbound Main Lanes of Woodall Rodgers Freeway Closed to Through Traffic this Weekend
Traffic will be detoured to I-30
DALLAS – The contractor, Archer Western, contracted by The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to construct the Woodall Rodgers Deck Park, will close both the westbound and eastbound main lanes of Woodall Rodgers Freeway at various times to through traffic this weekend.
Additionally, two westbound frontage roads will be closed during this time. This is the second closure with several more expected over the next couple of months for this activity. These closures are necessary to ensure the safety of the traveling public during the complex operations involved in the placing of beams for the project. The beams serve as the base of the park located above the freeway. The three main closures are detailed below:
- The westbound mainlanes of Woodall Rodgers Freeway will be closed at midnight late on Saturday (early Sunday), February 19, 2011.
- The eastbound lanes will be closed at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, February 20, 2011. At the same time, two of the westbound mainlanes of Woodall Rodgers will reopen. These closures will reopen early Monday morning, February 21, 2011, at 5 a.m.
- Also at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, February 20, 2011, the westbound frontage road of Woodall Rodgers will be closed between Olive Street and St. Paul. Motorists will be detoured north on Olive Street, then west on McKinney, then south on St. Paul back to the westbound frontage road. The closure will reopen early Monday morning, February 21, 2011, at 5 a.m.
Both southbound US 75 traffic and northbound I-45 traffic bound for westbound Woodall Rodgers will be detoured to westbound I-30. Southbound I-35E traffic will be detoured to eastbound I-30. I-30 traffic wanting to go eastbound on Woodall Rodgers will be directed to I-45 northbound. Motorists should seek alternate routes to navigate to their destinations through downtown Dallas this weekend. Signage has been in place informing motorists of the upcoming closure.
TxDOT strives to minimize the impact of these closures to area motorists by limiting the work to occur during off-peak hours or weekends, limiting the number of closures and as noted above, gives consideration to weekend events in the area.
Information on future construction activities will be posted on TxDOT’s website at www.txdot.gov in addition to postings on the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation website at www.theparkdallas.org under the mobility section.
TxDOT awarded the $44.5 million dollar contract to Archer Western to construct the deck and plaza over Woodall Rodgers Freeway. The project starts west of St. Paul and extends 1/4 mile to east of Pearl Street, and when complete, will create a short tunnel.
This partnership project between TxDOT, the City of Dallas and the private sector included $16.7 million dollars of enhancement funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is scheduled to be completed in early 2012.
TxDOT asks motorists to drive carefully through the work zone and appreciates their patience during this unique and exciting project.
