Public urged to send a 'touch of home' to service members
WAXAHACHIE—For a fourth year, the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. are teaming up to deliver holiday cards to service members, their families and veterans, many of whom will be far from home this holiday season.
On Saturday, Nov. 13, Ellis County residents can stop by the Texas Music Theater, 110 West Main Street in Waxahachie, from 12:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., and write a special greeting on a holiday card donated by the Hallmark Corporation. In perfect harmony, the Texas Music Theater will be showcasing a USO show which will play at 1:00pm, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. On top of that, a WWII re-enactment will take place on the town square at 3 p.m.
“Sending a card is a small effort that makes a big impact on our American heroes during the holiday season,” said Shelly Campbell, Manager Ellis County Red Cross. “We serve and support members of the military, veterans, and their families by providing emergency communications, comfort and assistance every day but the holidays are special times. We need the community’s help to send warm wishes this year to those who otherwise might receive very little.”
Tim Eaton with the Texas Music Theater welcomes the Red Cross and the community to support the United States Armed Forces. “I come from a military family so I know how much it meant to my loved ones to get a greeting when they were far from home. That’s why I’m especially thrilled to be able to provide a place for our community to stop by and sign their holiday greetings through the Red Cross.”
Last year, with the help of Pitney Bowes, hundreds of volunteers screened, sorted and packaged 1 million cards that were delivered to military bases and veteran and military hospitals across the U.S. and around the world.
For reasons of processing and safety, participants are asked to refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any inserts with the cards. Cards sent by mail must be postmarked by December 10. Please be sure to affix adequate postage. All cards received after December 10 will be returned to senders.
Holiday cards should be addressed and sent to:
