TxDOT Breaks Ground On Safety Improvements for FM 55

Project funded through the Proposition 14 Safety Bond program

NAVARRO COUNTY – The Texas Department of Transportation began work this week on a new project near Purdon in southern Navarro County to make safety improvements to FM 55 from SH 31 to 2.5 miles to the south.

The project includes “safety widening” by adding one foot in width to each lane. The lanes are currently 11-feet wide. In addition, 1-foot wide shoulders will be added to each side of the road. During construction the pavement edges will be repaired.  Since the posted speed limit is 60 miles per hour, the additional width and shoulders will contribute to increased safety.

Big Creek Construction of Hewitt, Texas won the project with a bid of $876,687.

This project was chosen to be funded by Proposition 14 Safety Bonds. These bonds were approved for issue by the Texas Transportation Commission in 2008 and are backed by the state highway fund. This project was selected for funding to improve the safety features of FM 878 and help prevent run-off-the-road type accidents.

The project is estimated to be substantially complete by July 2011.
