Ennis is Growing!

Meals-on-Wheels services are growing in Ennis, and volunteers are needed to help

ENNIS - There is a growing need for meals in Ennis, and Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson & Ellis Counties needs a twelfth meal delivery route.  Meals-on-Wheels currently has eleven routes serving over 120 homebound elderly and disabled.  “With the additional route, we will be able to serve additional people, as well as shorten the existing routes,” Tracy Robinson, director of client services said.

With the addition of a twelfth route, Meals-on-Wheels needs additional volunteers to help get noontime meals delivered.  “We need volunteers for every day of the week,” said Lisa Gordon, volunteer coordinator.  Prepared meals are picked up at the First United Methodist Church  located at 300 N. Sherman, and served Monday through Friday between eleven A.M. and the noon hour, with delivery times taking no longer than forty-five minutes.  Volunteers are provided with detailed directions and instructions, and help when they can, whether it is weekly, a couple of times a month, or simply on an as needed basis.

In addition, Ennis State Bank will be hosting a volunteer mixer on Tuesday, November 9 from 5 to 7 pm to help promote the need and importance of volunteers in the community.   Current volunteers and those wanting volunteer information are invited to attend.  For more information, please contact Lisa Gordon at the Meals-on-Wheels offices.

“For our volunteers who deliver meals, they are not only helping to feed the hungry, they are breaking the isolation that many of these people feel,” added Gordon.  “Without caring volunteers, what we do would not be possible.”

If you are interested in volunteering, attending the volunteer mixer, or if you know of someone who could benefit from Meals-on-Wheels services, please call (972) 351-9943 or on the web at www.servingthechildrenofyesterday.org.  Meals-on-Wheels is a community benefit organization serving the residents of Ennis and all of Ellis County for over nine years.
