Give the Christmas gift of your time

Ever wonder why God chose Mary? I used to, then I was studying for a Bible Study message on that very subject, when I discovered that throughout the conversation, Mary never said no. Even though she was facing certain humiliation, possibly losing the love of her life, her family and even possible execution by stoning… her response was, well, in our language, "Cool!"
Mary had the uncanny inner peace of knowing God was totally in control of the circumstances, all she had to do was to be obedient to the command.
So why are we so desperately consumed by today’s financial crisis? God is faithful! God is the same yesterday, today and forever! Why would we disobey the command of being good stewards of what God has given to us and choose to purchase what we can not afford – let alone need!
Four years ago, my husband and I were at an electronics store at Christmas time I would point and he would say, "No, Grandpa, gave, Easter" I would point again, and he would say, "No… Aunt… gave… school project thing…" and he would point and we discovered that… no, the kids had that too… then another item… no, they got that for their birthday… another store only to discover that they received those "hot" items for their straight A’s, homerun, making varsity, lost tooth, broken nose you get the picture.
So, we decided that year - NO MORE GIFTS! And we have not purchased one single Christmas gift for our children since!
That first year was difficult. What was really strange is that it was not due to economics, it was due to greed! They had it all!
We did not know what to do that day so, we did what we knew! We celebrated the Birth of our Savior by opening the day in prayer, calling our family then I cooked a huge breakfast and we broke out the Monopoly game (ironic, I know) and we played all day and laughed until 3 a.m. the next morning.
It was absolutely the most fabulous Christmas ever! And we have continued the tradition ever since and yes is some ways I felt humiliated, embarrassed but I knew we were right! My family thought we were horrible- Cool! (Did they ever mention Mary’s mother in that passage)?
Please do not feel compelled to answer to the world when it comes to the amount of money you spend or the gifts you purchase.
I have a reminder for you: Give a gift of encouragement to your spouse, your children, your best friends and your family. Choose to serve them this Christmas season.
Your family wants YOU! Fill up their Christmas lists with your time and live it up this Christmas – with each other and make some memories that are far more precious than any gift you could ever purchase. No gifts? Cool!
