The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jer.17:9)

All you have to do is read the newspaper and watch television and you will be convinced men’s hearts are desperately wicked.

Everyday the news is filled with detailed accounts of brutal murders, adultery and greed.

What could be more wicked than a mother murdering her unborn child?

Christ identified the true source of such wickedness when He said, "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders." (Mat 15:19)

But the above mentioned acts are not the only expressions of a wicked heart.

There are others which are not covered by the news media but which are just as wicked in the sight of God.

What is the reason why men have so many excuses for not serving and worshiping the true and living God?

Christ gave a parable in which He listed some of the ways which men excuse themselves from acknowledging the just claims of God upon their lives.

"But they all alike began to make excuses.

"The first one said to him, I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.

"And another one said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.

"And another one said, I have married a wife and for that reason I cannot come."

If men gave such flimsy excuses to their employer for not showing up on the job, they would be in jeopardy of losing their jobs.

Yet, many give similar excuses for not worshiping God.

Can you imagine telling your employer that you can’t come to work because you have to wash your clothes or the car, or that you have to catch upon your yard work?

Multitudes this very day will offer such excuses to God.

They have deceived themselves into thinking God will be more tolerant of those who break His Law than their employer would be for violating standard work requirements.

Where do such thoughts come from?

What is the source of such false reasonings?

Ultimately it must be traced back to a deceitful and wicked heart.

Only a deceitful and wicked heart could cause one to disregard his Creator’s just claims upon his life.

There is a remedy.

True salvation involves a drastic change of heart which God alone can accomplish.

It is described in these words, "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

"And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and you will be careful to observe My ordinances."
