Enemies of the cross

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame- who set their mind on earthly things. Philippians 3:18,19

The cross of Jesus Christ is the symbol of Christianity, the very instrument used to kill everyone subjected to its cruel punishment.

No one including Jesus Himself escaped its sentence of a slow and painful death.

Today the cross of Christ has been removed from our religious vocabulary and worn around our necks as a distant memory of something that happened to someone else long ago, encrusted with jewels and settings of gold, the idea has been lost that this wooden stake destroyed everyone that was nailed upon it.

The cross of Christ comes to everyone who accepts His calling to follow Him.

It is not an option, it is a condition of salvation for one to take up his cross and follow the Lord wherever He leads.

The cross will destroy all the fleshly works of man by putting to death all selfish motives and ambitions.

To follow Christ is to die to the world with all of its temptations and earthly pleasures.

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” Luke 9:23

Whose end is destruction

Jesus said to enter by the narrow gate because it led to eternal life and broad is the way that leads men to destruction.

There are many things that lead man to take a detour from the path of life, the worries of the world, the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches. Jesus is the only way to eternal life and one must lay down his life to find Him and allow the cross to take him through the narrow gate.

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” Luke 9:24

Whose God is their belly

The appetite of man is endless and his hunger for the things of the world make him gorge himself with riches and pleasures, only to become obese with things that don’t profit eternally. The devil tempted Jesus with all the glory of the kingdoms of the world and told Him if He would worship him they would all be His. Jesus declined the offer and told him to worship the Lord God and Him only!

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?” Luke 9:25

Whose glory is in their shame

The glory of the world and all of its accolades will pale greatly in the light of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ when He appears. His magnificent presence will dull all the world has to offer and millions will be ashamed that they gave there hearts to that which is worthless and does not matter in comparison to His glory! Shame and condemnation awaits those who worship the world and its riches.

“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s and of the holy angels. Luke 9:26

Who set their minds on earthly things

The mind of man is filled with every conceivable earthly thing imaginable and with access to the Internet the possibilities are endless. God made our mind in the image of His own mind, capable of holding in its memory, the word of God. The challenge for every child of God is to renew our earthly minds with the words of the living God, thus having the mind of Christ.

If then you were raised up with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

Set your mind on things above not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth:  fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. Colossians 3:1-10
