The Ellis County Press: Hawks hold inter-squad scrimmages Hawks hold inter-squad scrimmages ================================================================================ Editor on 08/12/2010 13:12:00 Steve Patterson The Ellis County Press RED OAK - Another High School football season is upon us. After a week of two-a-days in extreme heat, the Red Oak Hawks held inter-squad scrimmages last Saturday. The Freshman and JV squads went first and the scrimmage ended with the Varsity team. The first question that comes to everyone’s mind is "how do you think they will do?" After the UIL re-alignment, Red Oak will face old foes for the next two seasons and a case could be made that District 15-4A is one of the toughest in the state with several of the teams last season making the play-offs. So how will the Hawks stack up against poll favorite’s Waxahachie, Ennis and Cors-icana? What about Forney and Lancaster? Only time will tell. After watching a fired up varsity squad, the Hawks seem undaunted by pre-season polls. Although it’s early, both leading contenders for QB looked good. Both Claud Person and James Satterwhite bring great athle-ticism to the field and Coach Shields will have a lot of evaluating to do. Many of the Hawks play makers are back this season. Mandel Dixon, who really came on last season, is powerful up the middle runner and yet fast enough to get behind the linebackers on pass plays. The speedy Ishmael Harrison returns and is extremely dangerous across the middle and always a deep threat. 2009 Freshman stand out Jeremiah Gaines was also seen in the offensive backfield carrying the ball and rolling out for short passes. Many of the offensive line are returning starters and now how to run Coach Shields’ offensive. Most of the defensive line and linebackers are also returning starters and are quick to the ball. The coaches and players are excited to get this season underway. The Hawks travel to Propser on Saturday, Aug. 14 in a pre-season scrimmage and then return for their final pre-season game against Joshua on Saturday, Aug. 21 in Red Oak. Make plans to support your Hawks at "Meet the Hawks" night on Monday, Aug. 23 at Billy Goodloe Stadium. The Hawks first game is on Friday, Aug. 27 when they host N. Garland. Scheduled kick off time is 7:30 p.m.
